Robbing the Pillars Gold Rush California s notorious Legislature of a Thousand Drinks launches a secret consortium of frontier barons triggering the collapse of independent mines throughout Sierra Nevada James MacLaren
I found Robbing the Pillars to be an entrancing read Here s why, without spoilers The author s writing is unhurried and to the point, choosing clear descriptions over a flowery tone This is evidenced by the following passage describing the periodic flooding the farmers endured Spring rains and melting snows from the nearby Sierra Nevada hurtled violent quantities of water down the mountainside, saturating the valley below Once the valley floor consumed it fill, ponding and spreading, it began it [...]
This book reminds me of why I love historical fiction Kalen Vaughan Johnson artistically illustrates life in California and Nevada City during the mid 1800s informing the reader about the nuances of gold mining, land grants and early statehood in the Wild West while introducing us to substantial characters involved in timeless struggles with power, politics, morality and friendship Finishing the book was bittersweet as I didn t want to say goodbye to these families and can only hope it will not [...]
Robbing the Pillars by Kalen Vaughan Johnson is an excellent must read The Gold Rush years are so detailed, and her accuracy of detail lends the reader a great history lesson all wrapped up in characters that will captivate you The story does not end in this 1st novel I am looking forward to action packed turns and twists as the characters past and future unfolds Thanks for a great read, Kalen

Author Kalen V Johnson takes us on an adventure as she recounts the tale of an immigrant family who came to America to find a better life The historical background is superbly described leaving the reader to truly feel the hardships of this nineteenth century family as well as their well deserved triumphs The story is engaging and enlightening and very much worth the read.
Loved it Nicely written way to learn history wrapped in a good story Waiting anxiously for the next installment.
Robbing the Pillars was an excellent read I enjoy historical fiction but it is not the primary genre I m drawn to Even so this book was informative without being dry, the characters were interesting and well written, and the story left me eagerly awaiting the next book in the series Between secrets kept by a close group of companions, rival cities trying to prosper at each other s expense, the business and political maneuvering of the Coleridge Sierra mining company, and the abuse of social stat [...]
A cozy historical fiction that takes place shortly after the California gold rush years I enjoyed how it showed the interplay between the lives of farmers, merchants and miners I look forward to reading the next book in this new series I would like to thank and Karen Vaughan Johnson for this free autographed book, I enjoyed reading it and will look forward to rereading it in the future.
I like this book very much I like the author, Kalen Vaughan Johnson, even Her photograph on the inside of the back cover page shows that she is a very lovely lady Therefor, she must have written a very beautiful book I liked it, but I didn t love it Three stars for me It is book number one in a new series by Kalen called The Empire Barons I don t know it just seemed to me to bog down in too many parts Too much detail in too many meetings of these new empire barons to be I can t decide if I shal [...]
Author Kalen Vaughan Johnson has crafted a wonderful novel that combines her extensive knowledge of a historic time period in the mid 19th century America with her gift for delivering characters that we come to both love and despise This emotional roller coaster of fictional life is also eerily reminiscent of personality traits we see exhibited in our world in present day Clearly a reminder that history is want to repeat itself.James MacLaren is a man that I would dearly love to call my friend W [...]
A Promising Start to an Epic Tale Robbing the Pillars, the first installment of a new series set in the California Gold Rush, explores a lot of territory, from family relationships to political intrigue to historical primer Fortunately, author Kalen Johnson is up to the task, breathing life into the wide cast of characters which occupy her world, giving them both honorable drives and all too real foibles Headstrong James MacLaren occupies the moral center of the story, having weathered a series [...]
A book of exquisite humanity and breathtaking vision ROBBING THE PILLARS walks us hand in hand with generations of men and women hoping to leave behind lives tainted by injustice and despair They settle the Sierra Nevada Range in the 1850s, enticed by dreams of gold These are times of struggle These are times of hope, when sailors abandon ships to strike out on their own with pick axes and mules to battle rock and grime, determined to find their fortunes in gold veins deep in the earth.Kalen Vau [...]
I really love historical fiction I like to be taken to another place in time, and live it out through the characters Who doesn t like the Wild West and Gold rushes I thought there was a lot of potential in this book However, I thought the flow of the book was off the transitions were lacking You felt like you were jumping around in the story a bit, which made it hard to follow the timeline The story opens up with a mining collapse and then jumps back in time with the rest of the story leading up [...]
My new favorite book This story will captivate you from the very beginning The author creates such vivid images of the setting and characters through the incredible amount of descriptive detail she offers It s very apparent a lot of research went into capturing this time period Looking forward to reading the sequel in this series Highly recommend
What an interesting story, I look forward to reading in the series
Full Disclosure 1 I don t usually read historical fiction But I m glad this is the first in a series The narrative and characters of Robbing the Pillars drew me in Johnson s development of the characters is delightful I soon came to know each figure as a person, as a three dimensional individual The relationships between characters are believable, shaped by their backstories and the narrative of present events Conflicts and attachments beset the characters without veering to melodrama, and serv [...]
