SQL Tuning By author Dan Tow published on December
Like Dan, I have been doing Oracle for a long time since 1984 I offer three opinions about Dan s book 1 learning how to do query diagrams is great for people who have never done them and this book is the best maybe even the only book for learning this In learning to do the diagrams, you will understand the basic logic and basic math that an optimizer must do in order to get you a good plan Do not worry It is not a deep math book and there are no complex calculations Indeed Dan shows you how basi [...]
Excellent book I m 30% through it, but I ve already used the techniques included to speed up 5 way table join including a window function by a factor of 10.The query in question now runs in a few seconds, not a few minutes Our customers are quite happy.Note that I m using Postgres, a database that isn t explicitly supported by this book. The DB is irrelevant This book tries from the very start to be as language agnostic as possible, and succeeds quite well The information is presented from a theo [...]
I am still reading this gem, just completed Chapter 3 I am a Senior Software Engineer and in course of my work write and tunes lots of SQL queries This book demystifies the techniques used to optimize SQL , by teaching us the basics and then building a solid foundation based on mathematics.Strongly recommended.
Good book Many popular DMBSs covered Would have loved to see detail and examples and not so much of an assumption that the reader understands where the reasoning tangent is going Rather assume the user has a basic knowledge and is looking to enhance it.
I hadn t had a chance to use this book as a practical guidance, but I enjoyed the clear and informative stile It helped me to learn about indexes and joins and the work of the database engine than any other book.
